PHOTOGRAPHER AND FILMMAKING
1 DAY
I was inspired by a Norwegian photojournalist, Jonas Bendiksen. According to Fouché (2009), Bendiksen spent two years photographing some of the world's most notorious slums and only focus on an issue he thinks has been largely ignored by the mainstream media. Bendiksen's photographic process in this famous exhibition, Dharavi, involves capturing the people daily life in a wide angle, and are elaborately staged. He looked for normal things that most people will ignore and completely miss. It significantly inspires me a lot, I like the approach from a different view and creative way he allocated the subject in each frame. Jonas Bendiksen with his artworks related to poor people in slums as well as the way the colors the photos which inspired me doing this topic for this project.

On the wayfinding inspiration, I accidentally found this view and captured this photo which wealthy and poverty are shown clearly.

Also on the Tran Xuan Soan Street, I saw there were many small ships which the local people use for transporting goods and trading on the river. Although in the busy and modern city, somewhere, this traditional activities of Vietnamese’s culture still exist and that made me capture this interesting view.

This is a photo of life in an old apartment in the Nguyen Huu Hao Street, District 4. Besides the modern buildings which I get used to a lot, this place made me feel so different insides.

I decided to go inside this old apartment to find different angles. After captured this photo, I decided to blend this color that made me feel so peaceful and the uncomfortable feeling inside me somehow disappeared.

At sunset, it was a good time to capture things with the beautiful natural yellow light from the sun. A shot from a small alley in Tan Phu District.

I continuously tried photographing close up shots while on a motorbike on Nguyen Van Cu Street, District 4 and I finally had this photo which I was satisfied a lot.

This photo which I was on Nguyen Kieu bridge, District 4, photographed people’s daily life on a ship.

An old man in a small house on Pham The Hien Street, District 4.

An old woman who was carrying a heavy carrying pole on Ton That Dam Street, District 1.

In the evening, house when the sun completely went down, I decided to tried low light shots before going home after a long shooting day. I was very tired and have no idea where to go but I luckily found a small house in Tan Phu District where there was an old man who was sitting outside his house. The light of a bulb created a beautiful shadow on his face, a nice contrast from light to dark made me quickly captured this moment without hesitation
